Welcome to CS12. Check back at this website over the course of the semester for additional information.

The required book for this course is:
The Exploring Series, by Prentice Hall - Microsoft Office 2003, Volume 1.

Here is a link to the book on Amazon. And another. And another.

The Queens College Book Store should be open today. They will be selling packets for $140.

We will cover Operating Systems, the Microsoft Office package, and Internet technologies.

The first assignment is to apply for an account in order to be able to log on to the computers in the lab. This time, I logged into the computers for you. Go to this website (right click to open in a new window):

https://cams.qc.cuny.edu/login.aspx

Click on "I am a first time user and do not have an account."

You will need to fill in your College ID, your Pin #, and your Billing Zip Code.

College ID is your Social Security Number, not the number on your photo ID.
Pin #, if you have not changed it, is your birthdate in the format mmddyy.

If you have questions, arrange to meet with me. Office hours will be after the lab.

My email address is joshwaxman {at} gmail {Dot} com.

Also, please fill out this survey, either in class or when you get home.

Installing OpenOffice:

Some of you do not have Microsoft Office at home, or do not have certain components of Microsoft Office. If so, this blogpost is directed towards you. Otherwise, not. I would not tell you to get Microsoft Office 2007, which seems to be the only one currently being sold in stores. Do not get it because the user interface is so different that you may have difficulties doing the homework, or applying what we learned in class. Instead, I would suggest you download and install OpenOffice.org, which is a free clone of Microsoft Office. There are slight differences from Microsoft Office, but it will be fairly straightforward to transfer what you learned in class, and vice versa.

Here is a video walkthrough of doing this:
